If you are, did you know that you
could stop a lot of it by registering with the appropriate 'Preference
Service'? Through these services you can register that you do not wish
to receive direct marketing mail or phone or fax calls.
To remove your (or that of a deceased relative) address and
telephone number from reputable direct mail companies, contact the
following organisations.
These are industry-supported initiatives, but be aware that it can
still take up to 3 months to stop the majority of direct mail, phone
calls and faxes. Also, not all junk mail comes from reputable
companies, so you may well continue to receive some unwanted mail. If
junk mail persists, contact the appropriate preference service to
establish if the sender supports the service, and if so report their
failure.
On 11th December 2003 the EU Privacy and Electronics Communication
Directive came into force making it an offence for companies in the UK
to send junk email unless the recipient is an existing customer or has
given their permission to receive such material. Firms that do not
comply could face a £5,000 fine for each breach.
