Pub Lunches - March thru May 2008

Hello readers, here is the latest dispatch from the
NE Associates Pub Lunch Circuit.

In March the clan gathered at the Skiff Inn, Swalwell, by the famous Metro Centre.  It was a difficult start to the morning, as when we arrived at 11.45 am the pub was closed.  Ten people stood in the cold and damp waiting for the doors to open, which happened at exactly 12 o'clock.  Unlike the weather the welcome from the staff was warm and friendly, the menu was extensive consisting of full English and Italian cuisine.
Twenty-nine Associates attended and thoroughly enjoyed the food and drink.

A hot sunny day, not April showers, was on the menu when thirty-six lunchers met at the Waterford Arms, Seaton Sluice (north of Whitley Bay).

The pub is famous for it's fish and chips and they did not let us down.

Depending on the size you could buy cod and chips etc.
at £6.50, £8.00, £11 or £14.

The latter weighed 26oz. uncooked.

Only one person attempted this and nearly finished.

He also found it difficult to move.

LINDSAY  is his name.
(Magazine spelling is incorrect!)

Such is the reputation of this venue, that thirty-five out of the thirty-six lunchers had the fish and chips - the other being a fish salad.  Who diets on pub lunch day?

In May it was another hot day in Newcastle, and that is just where we were, in the Union Rooms Pub (Wetherspoons) near the Central and Metro Station.
All twenty-eight lunchers used public transport.  Wetherspoons Pubs give excellent value for money and we were also given vouchers offering further deals on beer and food.

The impressive Union Rooms facade in 2008 and in 1904.  The 1862 monument to George Stephenson and 12C St. John's Church can also be seen.

For some reason this lunch lasted much longer than normal - maybe people were unsure of the bus times!  However, everyone agreed that we should have another drive-free pub lunch ASAP.

Look again for more stories about pub lunches and lunchers in three months time.
